It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Verlon Wayne Prewitt of Irvine on December 25, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born on October 17, 1935 in Estill County.
He will be lovingly remembered by his son Christopher Wayne Prewitt (spouse, Tammy Scrivner Prewitt); brother, Richard Leon Prewittt, grandchildren: William Jacob Prewitt (spouse, Jennifer Millard Prewitt), Christopher Brandon Prewitt, and Eric Ryan Prewitt; Step-great granddaughter Grace Renee Rice; Lois’ Children Catherine Calvert Deloach, Stephanie Calvert Day, Jerry Calvert II (spouse Chris Bova) as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Patrica Ann Tucker married 1956 until her death in 1999. He married Lois June Tudor in 2000 until her death in April 2025. He was also predeceased by his son, William Gregory (Goose) Prewitt; sister Catherine Prewitt Tipton, brothers Willliam Wesley (Sonny) Prewitt, Bobby Gene Prewitt, Ronnie Prewitt (infant); and his parents: Willam Roscoe Prewitt and Elizabeth Hughes Prewitt.
Verlon attended Ravenna Elementary, Irvine High School and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a BBA dual major of Math and Physics.
He began work early in his life with a paper route at 12 years old and as a child and through his teen years at the Ravenna Drug Store. While attending Eastern Kentucky University he worked for L & N Railroad.
Upon graduation Verlon taught Physics at Irvine High School. Among his students were Steve Garrett, Nancy Farmer, Butch Bryant (attended West Point), and 3 students that attended the University of Kentucky Medical School.
He began his illustrious career at Carhartt, Inc.as the Assistant Plant Engineer, became the Plant Manager of Irvine Plant soon after, and held positions of increasing responsibility that culminated as the Chief Operating Officer for the entire company. Verlon was instrumental in the growth of Carhartt adding plants in the United States as well as plants globally. Verlon retired from Carhartt, Inc. in 2004 but continued work as a consultant for a plant in Holland.
He spent 7 years in the Kentucky National Guard and attained the rank of Seargent 1st Class. He later transferred to the US Army Reserve and retired as a Lt. Colonel.
Verlon took great pride in the boy scout program. He was a boy scout early in his life as an elementary student. He later became the Scout Master in Irvine. During this time there were weekly meetings, trips, overnight camping and the annual week at boy scout camp. In the 7 years as Scout Master there were 7 young men that earned the level of Eagle Scout under his leadership.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the Estill County Golf Club. He enjoyed playing with his friends and won the Club Championship in 1970 and 1971.
Verlon was involved in his community. He served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. Verlon was a shareholder at Citizens Guaranty Bank from 1997 – 2006, served as a member of the board of directors from 1998 – 2021, vice-chairmen for 7 years and chairmen of the board for 9 years. He was a lifelong member of Kawanis. He founded the Board of Century 2021, known now as the Estill Development Alliance or EDA. His giving continued with donations to Estill County High School, just recently to the technology center and Eastern Kentucky University. For 10 years, Verlon hosted an annual Hospice fund raiser. He was a faithful member of Irvine First Christian church.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to his caretakers, the staff at Dominion Senior Living and the staff at Bluegrass Care Navigators formally known as Hospice of the Bluegrass for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly request donations be made to Sanders-Brown Center on Aging or Hospice Care Plus.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 4, 2 PM, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 12 to 2 PM.
