Obituary for Ray "Holbie" Holbrook

Ray “Holbie” Holbrook, 95, of Irvine, Kentucky, passed away on February 2, 2025, at his home. He was born on December 21, 1929, in Irvine, Kentucky, to the late Harrison and Meda Jane Holbrook. On March 4, 1959, Holbie married the love of his life, Louise Dunaway, and together they spent 65 wonderful years building a life filled with love and devotion to each other and their family.

Holbie proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and he had a deep sense of patriotism for his country.

A successful businessman, Holbie spent years working alongside his wife as the owner and operator of Mac’s Mobile Homes and Holbrook Rentals.

Holbie had a deep sense of pride in his community and was involved in and supported many organizations in Irvine and Estill County. He was a devoted member of the Rice Station Christian Church. Until his health prevented it, he could always be found playing in the Wednesday evening scramble and July 4th tournament at the Estill County Golf Club. Freemasonry was an important part of Holbie’s life, and he was a member of the Irvine Masonic Lodge and Stafford Masonic Lodge 562. He also had been a longtime member of the Oleika Shriners.

Holbie’s love of sports and competition was evident throughout his life. An all-around gifted athlete, Holbie excelled at any sport he participated in and had a deep passion for golf. He was especially proud to be part of the 1999 Senior Softball World Series, a testament to his energy, enthusiasm, and competitive spirit. He loved following the Cincinnati Reds and the University of Kentucky basketball and football teams.

Holbie and Louise traveled the world together, and they loved sharing their passion for traveling with their family. In his retirement, Holbie was always planning the next trip in their RV, and he always loved it when one of the grandkids could join them on an RV trip.

In addition to his wife, Louise, Holbie is survived by his two daughters, Janet Stepp and Connie Witt, his grandchildren Tara Friend (Bill), Robert Stepp (Tabitha), Ethan Witt, and Abby Witt, his great grandchildren Rylee Friend, Logan Friend, Brody Stepp, Bryce Stepp, Bryndle Stepp, Nora Witt, and Cole Witt.

Holbie was lovingly cared for in his final years by a group of ladies who became like family: Christina Coffey, Gina Powell, Lisa Sparks, Missy Walling, Jo Walling, and Amanda Kirby.

Holbie was preceded in death by his siblings Ethel Bardill, Edna Cole, Jewell Bushelman, Clyde Holbrook, Dale Holbrook, Jesse Holbrook, and Ralph Holbrook.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home with Masonic Rites conducted at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home with burial to follow at West Irvine Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scotty Durbin, Darrell Dunaway, Jim Huggins Sr., George McIntosh, Richard Snowden, Earl Blackwell, Rodney Davis, and Bo Leach.
